Effects of physical exercise on the quality of life of children and adolescents with autism

A literature review

Abstract

The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliographic review on the existing scientific evidence about the effects of physical activity and/or physical exercise programs on conduct, behavior, socialization and quality of life in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A bibliographic search was performed in PubMed and a total of 12 articles that met the inclusion criteria were identified. The results indicate that aquatic interventions (swimming), contact sports (judo), games (group dynamics), dance, team sports (mini-basketball) and general physical activity seem to promote significantly beneficial changes in the lives of children. and adolescents with ASD, such as improvement in emotion management, reduction of self-harming behaviors, increase in self-esteem and personal autonomy, among others. However, the absence of studies longer than twenty-four weeks makes it difficult to know the permanence of these new habits during their lifetime, which in turn makes it difficult to evaluate whether the improvements in the variables studied represent a real qualitative and quantifiable leap in the long term.

Josune Rodríguez-Negro, Dra., Universidad del País Vasco

Doctora en Actividad Física y Deporte por la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU). Es graduada en educación primaria con especialidad en educación física, maestra funcionaria de educación física y máster en investigación en ciencias de la actividad física y el deporte. Sus líneas de investigación se centran en la educación física, la actividad física y las habilidades motrices en poblaciones infantiles. Tiene más de 60 publicaciones científicas, ha participado en numerosos congresos a nivel nacional e internacional y es revisora externa de multitud de revistas. Además, ha realizado varias estancias de investigación en centros de referencia internacionales, la última en Finlandia. Actualmente trabaja como PDI en la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU).

Bingen Marcos-Rivero, Universidad del País Vasco

Graduado en Educación Primaria con especialidad en Educación Física y ha cursado el máster en investigación en ciencias de la actividad física y el deporte de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU). En la actualidad está finalizando el grado de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte y realizando la tesis doctoral en la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), que analiza la formación de los futuros docentes de Educación Física en los ámbitos de la inclusión y aprendizaje cooperativo. Además, ha participado en diversos congresos a nivel nacional e internacional.

Javier Yanci Irigoyen, Dr., Universidad del País Vasco

Profesor titular en el departamento de Educación Física y Deportiva de la Facultad de Educación y Deporte en la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU). Doctor en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte, es responsable del Laboratorio de Comportamiento Motor (UPV/EHU) y miembro del comité editorial de Research in Sports Medicine, Revista Analíticos, Edorium Journal of Disability and Rehabilitation, International Journal of Clinical Neurology and Brain Research, Revista Iberoamericana de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, y Sports Science & Medicine Journal. Es también revisor externo en más de 50 revistas científicas nacionales e internacionales y miembro del Comité de Ética para la Investigación con Seres Humanos (CEISH) de la UPV/EHU (2014-2018). Ha publicado más de 270 artículos científicos tanto en revistas nacionales como internacionales y 40 capítulos de libro. Miembro de varios grupos de investigación, sus principales líneas de investigación son la actividad física y el deporte adaptado e inclusivo.
