Neurodiversity and disability
a theoretical and critical reflection
Abstract
Introduction: The article addresses the complexity and controversies surrounding the concept of neurodiversity and disability in the field of mental health.
Objective: To critically explore the current landscape of neurodiversity, addressing the various interpretations and applications of this concept.
Development: It is noted that the lack of clarity in its definition has generated polarized debates about its utility and validity. Some argue that the neurodiversity approach solely blames society, while others acknowledge the influence of both social and individual factors. Additionally, the breadth of this concept and its implications for diagnostic categories in neurology and psychiatry are discussed.
Conclusions: The article proposes a critical reflection and a review of the social model of disability as a theoretical tool to validate the concept of neurodiversity and its practical application in mental health research and intervention.
